Insight is only as strong as the data behind it.
Data and analytics professionals give financial institutions a clearer view of risk, clients and markets, and turn AI from a promising pilot into something the business can rely on. With the right team in place, leadership gains faster, better-evidenced decisions and confidence that investment in data and AI is paying back.
We specialise in data and analytics recruitment for financial services across Hong Kong and Mainland China, introducing AI specialists, data analysts, data engineers, data scientists, and MLOps and machine learning engineers to global banks, hedge funds and global insurers.
Fintech Data & analytics recruitment
Each of our consultants specialises in one area. In data and analytics, that means keeping our market knowledge current every day, tracking how cloud data platforms and large language models are reshaping teams, how new roles like AI engineer and MLOps engineer are defined, and how pay is moving across Hong Kong and Mainland China.
For Head of Data, CDO or Head of AI roles, we extend into executive search, where leadership and regulatory credibility count as much as technical depth.
Beyond Python, SQL, pipelines and model deployment, we look for:
- Judgement: knowing when data is ready to inform a decision
- Communication: explaining results to trading, risk and senior stakeholders
- Responsible practice: handling sensitive data within each jurisdiction’s rules
A consultant who knows this market screens every candidate on what they have built and deployed, not only their job title.
We recruit across data and AI, from analytics through to production machine learning:
- Artificial Intelligence: AI engineers, AI specialists and AI leads who bring generative and agentic AI into production with the controls financial services requires.
- Data Analytics: BI developers, product analysts and insights specialists who turn trading, client and operational data into reporting leadership can act on.
- Data Engineering: data engineers and data platform specialists who build the pipelines, ETL processes and big data platforms that analytics and AI depend on.
- Data Science: data scientists and quantitative modellers working across predictive modelling, natural language processing and computer vision.
- MLOps & Machine Learning: machine learning and MLOps engineers who deploy, monitor and maintain models reliably at scale.
- QA & Testing: test engineers and automation specialists who protect release quality in controlled environments.
Supporting an in-house team at a global bank, hedge fund or insurer begins with the team you have, where the gaps are and what your data or AI roadmap needs next. That helps you decide where a permanent hire builds capability, where contract support keeps a programme moving and what order to hire in.
Professional services firms get skills-led, client-ready searches, matched to start dates, sector experience and languages such as Mandarin or Cantonese.
Hiring in Hong Kong and Mainland China brings its own practical details, and we work to them, including contract extensions, Mandatory Provident Fund arrangements, visa timings and cross-border team set-up. We offer permanent, contract and executive search hiring; see our permanent recruitment and contract hiring pages for more detail.
We support organisations where data and AI carry real commercial and regulatory weight:
- Global banks: risk, client and operational data programmes, and the move from AI pilots into everyday operations.
- Hedge funds: research and trading teams where the quality and timeliness of market data shape performance.
- Global insurers: pricing, claims and customer analytics built on large, long-held datasets.
- Fintech: digital and fintech teams within financial institutions building data-led products and services.
- Multinational corporations: FMCG and consumer goods businesses and professional services firms, where regional teams use data to understand customers and markets across Asia.
Data and AI hiring in financial services rests on details that are easy to miss on paper. Was a model ever deployed? Did a pipeline run on live trading data? Did an analyst’s work change a decision? Our consultants focus on those details, because a data hire’s work can feed directly into risk, trading and client outcomes.
Before anyone reaches your interview stage, we explore three things:
- What candidates have built and run in production
- How they have handled sensitive data
- How they have explained their work to non-technical colleagues
We also share current salary insight, realistic availability and how comparable profiles are moving across Hong Kong and Mainland China, so you can plan with confidence. Drawing on a network of 900,000+ candidates, we keep in regular contact with experienced data and AI professionals who are open to the right move but aren’t advertising it.
Data & analytics market intelligence
Data and AI tooling moves quickly, so our consultants look as closely at how candidates have applied a technology as at which ones they know.
Python and SQL are the common ground across these roles. For data engineering, we explore experience with Spark and cloud data platforms such as Databricks and Snowflake. For analytics, we ask about BI tools such as Tableau and Power BI, and how candidates have used them to answer real business questions. For data science and AI roles, the conversation covers machine learning frameworks, natural language processing and large language models. For MLOps, it covers how candidates have deployed, monitored and versioned models in production. In hedge funds, experience with time-series and market data, including KDB environments, can matter as much as general data skills.
Some Mainland China teams work on domestic cloud and AI platforms, so we ask about the environments candidates have worked in as well as the tools they’ve used. Cloud certifications can support a profile, but our conversations centre on production experience, model governance and how financial data is controlled.
The nearer a role is to production AI, the more it tends to pay. At mid-level, AI and MLOps specialists lead, then data science and machine learning engineering, then data engineering and analytics. Hong Kong ranges sit higher than Mainland China for the same roles. As a guide, for professionals with four to eight years’ experience:
Hong Kong
- Data Analytics: HKD 600,000 - 850,000
- Data Engineering: HKD 720,000 - 1,050,000
- Data Science & ML Engineering: HKD 800,000 - 1,200,000
- AI Specialist & MLOps: HKD 950,000 - 1,400,000+
Mainland China
- Data Analytics: RMB 300,000 - 480,000
- Data Engineering: RMB 380,000 - 650,000
- Data Science & ML Engineering: RMB 420,000 - 720,000
- AI Specialist & MLOps: RMB 500,000 - 900,000+
Contract roles are structured differently from annual salaries, so we’re happy to talk you through current rates separately. For tailored benchmarking by role, seniority and employer type, visit our benchmarking page.
AI in financial services is moving from internal pilots into the products and services clients use. That shift is changing the profiles institutions hire for. Once a model faces customers or informs a trading or credit decision, testing, monitoring and explainability become part of the hiring brief rather than an afterthought. Data quality upstream matters just as much, because a model can only be as dependable as the data engineering behind it.
The rules shape the work too. In Hong Kong, the Artificial Intelligence: Model Personal Data Protection Framework sets out recommended practice for organisations procuring and using AI with personal data. Teams that move data between Hong Kong and the Mainland cities of the Greater Bay Area can use the GBA Standard Contract. In Mainland China, the Personal Information Protection Law governs how personal information is handled and transferred, while national policy is encouraging AI adoption across sectors including finance. Data and AI professionals who have delivered within these frameworks can keep a programme moving through review and approval.
A useful interview question is how a candidate would show a compliance colleague why a model reached a particular result.
Current market research points to a clear gap. Around three in four financial institutions surveyed report technical skills gaps in generative AI, and a majority report shortages in compliance skills. The rarest profile combines AI capability with an understanding of financial regulation and local market operations.
For hiring managers, that makes breadth worth looking for. A data scientist who has worked alongside risk teams, or a data engineer who understands how regulatory reporting draws on their pipelines, can add value well beyond the immediate role. Data governance and quality are also rising up the agenda as institutions prepare for more advanced AI. Professionals who can tidy, document and control data at source are increasingly central to the plan.
