Marine Underwriting Manager

This role offers an excellent opportunity for experienced marine underwriters to contribute to a global organisation committed to sustainable growth and innovative risk solutions. The Marine Underwriting Manager will be responsible for supporting and managing underwriting performance within the North Asia and Greater China regions, focusing on markets including Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, and South Korea. This position plays a critical role in ensuring underwriting quality, accurate pricing, and adherence to risk appetite, directly impacting the organisation’s profitability and market standing.

Role Overview:
The Marine Underwriting Manager is integral to the organisation’s marine insurance team, overseeing underwriting operations for key territories in North Asia. The role involves managing risk assessment, pricing, broker and client relationships, and ensuring compliance with underwriting standards to support profitable growth within the company’s strategic framework.

Key Skills & Experience:
• Approximately 8 years of marine insurance underwriting experience (or equivalent risk advisory experience in marine lines)
• Proven ability to underwrite Marine Cargo, Marine Hull & Machinery, Marine Liability, or related exposures
• Strong knowledge of marine risk assessment, policy wording, endorsements, and coverage mechanics
• Demonstrated success in underwriting decision-making that supports profitable growth and loss control

Key Responsibilities:
• Underwrite marine risks in accordance with delegated authority and underwriting guidelines
• Monitor portfolio performance, including loss ratio, claims trends, and exposure changes to manage profitability and volatility
• Evaluate risk submissions, applying pricing principles and assisting with rate adequacy assessments using internal tools and actuarial support
• Maintain high underwriting standards through accurate documentation, risk descriptions, and policy issuance support
• Build and maintain relationships with brokers and marine stakeholders across Greater China and North Asia to support renewals and negotiations
• Collaborate with claims, actuarial, reinsurance, and operations teams to identify loss trends and ensure proper policy placement
• Support internal audits by ensuring underwriting files adhere to policy and compliance standards

Requirements:
• Right to work in Asia and based on-site as required
• Relevant experience in marine insurance underwriting for approximately 8 years
• Knowledge of marine risk classes, including Cargo, Hull, Liability, and related exposures
• Strong technical underwriting skills, with a focus on risk evaluation, pricing, and exposure management
• Ability to work collaboratively across departments and build strong broker relations
