We are seeking a passionate and technically driven Junior Data Engineer to support the development and optimisation of data infrastructure on Alibaba Cloud. This role is based in the dynamic city of Hong Kong and offers an opportunity to work on major data migration and transformation projects. The ideal candidate will be expected to assist in building scalable data pipelines and maintain data architectures that support business intelligence and analytics workloads. A strong interest in cloud computing, data engineering processes, and best practices is essential.
Key responsibilities include assisting senior engineers in the design, development, and maintenance of scalable and reliable data pipelines hosted on Alibaba Cloud. You will help drive migration projects from legacy systems to Aliyun, ensuring data quality, performance, and compliance are preserved. Collaboration across teams is crucial, and you will coordinate with data scientists, analysts, and business partners to meet evolving data needs. You will support data governance and manage documentation to maintain standards in data security and quality. Daily tasks also involve optimising workflows and contributing to efforts that resolve bottlenecks in data processing.
The ideal candidate should possess strong programming abilities in Python and SQL, with a willingness to further develop skills in Java or Scala. Familiarity with data modelling, ETL/ELT processes, and orchestration tools is essential. Exposure to Alibaba Cloud technologies such as MaxCompute, DataWorks, RDS, OSS, and EMR, alongside an understanding of DevOps principles and continuous integration pipelines for data workflows, is highly desirable. Being self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills is a must, and fluency in English and Mandarin is required due to team collaboration and documentation requirements.
Desirable qualifications include a relevant Alibaba Cloud Professional Certification such as the ACP in Big Data or Cloud Computing. Any hands-on experience with real-time data processing frameworks such as Apache Kafka or Flink will be considered a strong asset. While this is a junior engineering position, involvement in guiding and learning from peers through knowledge-sharing is encouraged and supported.
