Our client is seeking an experienced and strategic Managing Director to lead the Commodity division within a leading investment bank based in Hong Kong. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional track record in commodities trading, risk management, and leadership at a senior level within global financial institutions. This high-impact role will be responsible for directing the strategic, commercial, and operational aspects of the commodity business and driving revenue growth across all related asset classes.
The successful candidate will oversee trading desks covering energy, metals, and agricultural commodities, as well as structured commodity finance and market analysis. A key focus will be on implementing regulatory-compliant trading strategies and ensuring robust risk management practices. This includes working closely with legal, compliance, and operations teams to maintain high standards of governance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the strategic vision for the Commodities business aligned with broader corporate objectives.
- Lead a team of senior traders, analysts, and support staff to optimise performance and profitability across all commodity sectors.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key institutional clients and stakeholders to expand market presence.
- Identify growth opportunities through new product development and geographical expansion.
- Manage risk exposure through robust oversight and engagement with risk management teams.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable regulatory and internal compliance requirements.
- Collaborate with internal departments including Technology, Finance, Legal and HR to support business growth and infrastructure.
Requirements:
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in commodities trading or related investment banking roles, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position.
- Extensive product knowledge across commodity sectors, including derivatives, structured products, and physical trades.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and proven ability to manage high-performing teams in a dynamic environment.
- Strong understanding of global regulatory frameworks impacting commodities markets.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at senior levels both internally and externally.
- Fluency in English; Mandarin or Cantonese is advantageous but not essential.
- Relevant academic qualifications, ideally at postgraduate level in Finance, Economics, or a related discipline.
